Chobits Review

Hideki, an 18-year-old student who got rejected by the university, moves to the city to go through cram school and struggles to pass. He's broke, talks out loud (and someone is always conveniently there to listen), and is still a virgin. Everybody in the city has a persecom (powerful computers in the shape of humans), and he can't afford one. So what does he do when he finds a strange, but beautiful, persecom in the trash? Why, take her home, of course. However, the persecom, affectionately named Chi, is without her operating system, so Hideki must teach her language and common sense. Unfortunately, Hideki acts like everything is the end of the world...

Although Chobits has your average boy-robot plot, CLAMP has given it a few twists. You have subplots that lead to the main one, and themes that question what is right and wrong. Should machines have the same rights as a human? Should humans be able to fall in love with such realistic machines? The anime goes very much in-depth in such subjects, and it provides comedy and entertainment at the same time.

The music is good. VERY good. The voice actress of Chi sang the endings, and they have a duet with the voice actors of Chi and Hideki at the end of the series. The opening song is absolutely wonderful, and I question why this anime was called a shounen. Every song was very girly.

The characters are great. I don't think I hated any of them. You have the innocent (Chi and Sumomo), the brainiac (Minoru), the high-strung one (Hideki), the seductive one (Shimizu), and just a jumble of everything. Chobits has a nice mix of everything, and it isn't tacky.

One thing that brought this anime down was the slow beginning. Episodes during this time were funny, but I felt like they were taking me nowhere. Things start to pick up about halfway through the anime, however, so if you can just sit through the first thirteen or so episodes, you'll see it's totally worth it.
